Key Stage 2 (Ages 7-11)
Key Stage 2 (Year 3 – Year 6):
In Key Stage 2, students build on the skills from Key Stage 1 and expand their knowledge across all subjects.
In Year 3, students are introduced to more complex reading materials, including poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, while developing grammar and writing composition skills. Mathematics becomes more challenging, with a focus on arithmetic, multiplication tables, and problem-solving using larger numbers. Students start exploring the scientific method, conducting small experiments, and developing their own questions for investigation.
By Year 4, students work more independently, enhancing their writing with greater accuracy in punctuation and grammar. They begin to apply language skills in various contexts, such as drama and debate, and expand their mathematical understanding to include fractions, decimals, and measurements. Inquiry-based learning is emphasized as students conduct simple research projects and apply the scientific method in their studies.
In Year 5, students transition to Upper Key Stage 2, with a focus on refining their language and writing skills for secondary school. They improve their ability to read quickly and make notes to aid comprehension, while writing becomes more complex and focused on composition and accuracy across a wide range of styles. Mathematics becomes more advanced, with an increased focus on problem-solving, including word problems and statistical concepts. Students take on more independent inquiry-based projects, learning to research topics, present findings, and make conclusions. They also start to connect their language skills with subjects like history and geography, offering presentations on topics learned during the year.
By Year 6, students are fully prepared for the demands of secondary school. They refine their communication skills through public speaking, performance, and debate, and their writing becomes fluent and confident. In mathematics, students review and consolidate their learning, covering a wide range of topics, including arithmetic, geometry, statistics, and word problems. Inquiry-based learning reaches its peak, with students encouraged to conduct independent research, ask complex questions, and develop critical thinking skills. Subject-specific vocabulary is reinforced in science, history, and geography to ensure a strong foundation for secondary education.
